Unexplained deaths of young trained sportists are highly visible events, underscored
by the widely publicized sudden cardiac deaths of elite professional athletes in the USA
and more recently athletes from Europe, South America, and Africa. Thus the sudden
deaths of sportists have had enormous impact on the public consciousness and attitudes
of the medical profession. Frequency of sudden cardiac deaths increases with age as
the young adult athlete progresses to collegiate, professional, and fi nally senior status.
Young competitive athletes who die suddenly are usually determined to have had silent
cardiovascular diseases, predominantly either cardiomyopathies, premature coronary
artery disease, or congenital coronary anomalies. N/A
