Abstract

Stress is an occurrence that is increasingly taken care of, as it can significantly influence both the outcome of the game and the outcome of the training process and the entire career of an athlete or a team. It leads to a drop of immunity, frequent injuries, makes recovery difficult, leads to a drop in motivation, self-confidence and concetration in players. When it comes to combatting athletic stress, sport psychologists are usually consulted, although there are ways in which the coach himself can help with stress prevention, as well. The main goal of the paper is to establish whether there is a significant link between the athletes’ perception of the style of behaviour of the coach and their level of stress. The secondary goals lies in obtaining the answers to the questions of whether there is a significant difference in the stress level and the perception of the style of behaviour of the coach in regard to the competitive level of the athlete and/or the age and state of development of the athlete. The sample of the examinees is comprised of 192 football players from the territory of Vojvodina and of various ages (12 to 35) and various competitive levels (top class / professional athlete; average / standard athlete; recreational athlete). Obtained results partially answer the question of what the attitude of the coach should be during the training process and during the match in order to reduce the level of stress in his players to a minimum. As highly valued behavioural traits of the coach, we can single out: offering support and comfort, clear communication, dedication to the athletes, while as the negative sides emphasized are: instilling fear, neglecting of athletes and being stern.
